Official Sharp website;Sharp Calculator Development Story

An ultra-thin card calculator that combines the world’s thinnest profile with an art-like design.

Description

This ultra-thin card calculator, produced by Sharp Corporation, achieved a world-leading thickness of just 1.6 mm at the time. Its flat exterior minimizes protrusions, and stainless steel touch keys are engraved with numbers and symbols, creating a design that resembles a piece of art despite being an industrial product.
With dimensions close to a credit card and a form stripped of excess, it embodies the late 1970s pursuit of “thinness” as both a technological and aesthetic value. As calculators became smaller, lighter, and more portable, the <EL-8152> stood out as a high-level integration of function and form. It was later selected for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
