Round obi fabric “shippokamon”
The “round obi” is the most prestigious and luxurious type of obi, with a pattern that is applied to the entire belt and also appears on the reverse side when it is tailored into an obi. In recent years, however, production of this type of obi has been greatly reduced due to problems of usage and price. This obi, in particular, has been carefully produced with meticulous attention to design, and is a valuable piece that will have very few opportunities to be produced in this class of obi in the future.
The cloisonne pattern is a design of interlocking circles of equal size, each quarter of which is connected to the other in all four directions. The circular shape symbolizes happiness, and since it expands infinitely when connected, it is considered a symbol of good fortune and represents longevity and prosperity of offspring.
The cloisonne pattern on the white-brown ground is decorated with gorgeous floral patterns, all of which are different from each other, and each is woven with outstanding weaving techniques. The patterns and colors that emerge clearly using the painstaking technique of tsuzuri weaving are reminiscent of gentle, soft young leaves, while at the same time exuding a dignified elegance. This traditional color scheme has long been loved as the so-called “Kawashima’s color scheme.
