A long-selling model defined by simple and timeless beauty.

Description

Reason for Selection:
A design characterized by universal beauty that remained beloved for over four decades. By laying the foundation for custom motorcycle culture, SR400 became a long-selling model deeply rooted in riders’ perceptions of what a motorcycle should be.

Description:
Since its launch in 1978, SR400 has been produced for decades with its essential design philosophy largely unchanged, featuring a simple kick-starter-only mechanism and a slim, classical silhouette. The designers pursued the “essential form of a motorcycle,” eliminating unnecessary ornamentation to highlight the inherent beauty of its mechanical structure. As a result, SR400 transcended its role as a mere product and became a “canvas” for riders—an ideal base for personal customization—thereby helping to establish a global custom motorcycle culture.

Despite facing repeated challenges posed by evolving emissions and noise regulations, the model continued to be developed and refined through the dedication of its engineers, remaining in production for an exceptionally long period. By being cherished and used over generations, SR400 embodies a sustainable, non-disposable approach to product value and represents the enduring significance of “unchanging design.” Its universal aesthetic has been widely recognized, earning numerous awards including the Good Design Long Life Design Award.
