A majestic chair named after a Yokozuna
Description
The name Kashiwado Chair comes from the fact that it was presented to Kashiwado, a native of Yamagata Prefecture, where Tendo Mokko’s headquarters is located, in commemoration of his promotion to Yokozuna.
The Kashiwado Chair was born in 1961 when Kenmochi Isamu worked on the interior of Atami Garden Hotel, designed by architect Tange Kenzo. It was designed as a chair with a similar presence, befitting the stately lobby space that Tange designed, which makes extensive use of stone and concrete. It is still on sale today as a Yokozuna-class chair that has a strong presence even in a large space.
This chair is made by selecting the rough grain of the root part of the cedar, called “cut root,” which is stacked into blocks and carved out. The surface is made using a technique called “uzukuri,” which makes the grain stand out beautifully along the unevenness, resulting in a piece of furniture with a sense of weight and dignity befitting the name of Yokozuna.
