11. Book Tendo Woodworking by Sugasawa Mitsukasa (Art Publishing House)
A classic Japanese chair with a serious design
Description
In 1954, this chair was designed by Mizunoe Tadaomi, who was in charge of interior design, for the reading room of the Kanagawa Prefectural Library, designed by architect Maekawa Kunio. It is said that over 100 prototypes were made before it was commercialized, and even after its release, Mizunoe continued to make improvements to the chair as if it were his life’s work.
This chair has a simple structure with a molded plywood back and seat sandwiched between a solid wood frame, making it easy to mass-produce. It is highly durable and comfortable to use, and its comfortable seating, created by its lines that follow the body, is a feature of this chair. Due to its universal design, it continues to be loved in a wide range of spaces, including dining spaces in ordinary homes, educational facilities, and restaurants.
