A masterpiece stool created by a designer
Description
The Butterfly Stool was first unveiled at the First Yanagi Industrial Design Research Association Exhibition held at Matsuya Ginza in 1956. Inspired by the molded plywood products designed by Eames, Yanagi Sori is said to have created the prototype of the Butterfly Stool through trial and error, cutting and bending paper to see if he could create something new using this technology. This design is said to be a fusion of Japanese aesthetics and Western modernism, and is now highly regarded worldwide as a design icon representing Japan, and is stored in museums around the world.
It features a simple structure in which two identical pieces of molded plywood are joined together with brass fittings and bolts, and the beautiful, smooth curves give a sense of the designer’s touch. Despite its unique form, it blends naturally into a variety of interiors, both Japanese and Western.
