This cordless home phone was made before mobile phones became popular. It was available in two colors, silver and black. It consisted of a hands-free station, a cordless phone, and a charger, and was made of plastic with a rough finish. In 1987, two years before this product was made and sold in 1989, the sale of cordless phones was liberalized, and the market was flooded with a variety of products. In addition to the competition over design, product designers struggled to reflect the ever-evolving technology in the creation of products that went from planning to prototyping. Igarashi’s solution was to cover the entire phone with a grid. This design, which made it possible to incorporate buttons for new functions added during the production stage without changing the shape, is a perfect example of a compromise between technological progress and the universal value of design.
